New acting Chief Executive for the Office of Criminal Justice Reform

Jonathan Slater takes over as OCJR’s Acting Chief Executive from 28 April.  He replaces David Wood.  Previously Jonathan was Director of Performance and Improvement at NOMS.

Crime in England and Wales 2006/2007 (new window)

This publication is the sixth report in an annual series that combines the reporting of police recorded crime (new window) and the British Crime Survey (new window) (BCS) results. The police recorded and BCS figures are a complementary series that together provide a better picture of crime than could be obtained from either series alone.  The main findings of the report are also available in the summary document (new window).

Howard League Community Programme Award (new window)

The Howard League for Penal Reform is looking for successful and innovative community programmes in the criminal justice sector.

The deadline to nominate for the Community Programme Award is 1 May 2008.  The Community Programme Award aims to encourage public and government support for successful community sentences, as well as encourage and foster good practice.  Each year 10 outstanding community programmes will be invited to a celebratory event in the House of Commons where awards will be presented.  The work of the winning schemes will be highlighted and publicised locally and nationally.

Process announced for appointment of new Lord Chief Justice (new window)

The process for appointing the next Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales has been announced.  The current Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, has been appointed as the Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and takes up the position on 1 October 2008.

Public Accounts Committee

Suma Chakrabati, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Roger Hill, Director of Probation, and Phil Wheatley, Chief Executive of NOMS appeared before the PAC on 23 April regarding the Supervision of community Orders in England.  A transcript of the meeting will be produced by the PAC in due course.
